How to sew a tissue box cover, a beginner sewing tutorial

My husband stashes tissue boxes in almost every room of our house, and often in prominently displayed places. A few years ago, I started trying to make them prettier by sewing tissue box covers. I made five-sided covers that were open on the bottom and these worked pretty well, but I knew the bottom didn’t have a cover and I didn’t like that. This rendition of the tissue box cover completely wraps around the box with a cute tie closure on top. I think they are adorable!

A tissue box cover is a great beginner sewing project that adds a warm, personal touch to your home. I made mine using a soft cotton gingham from my stash but you can use any fabric you like.

Materials

  • 1/2 yard pre-washed fabric of your choice (I used a quilting weight 100% cotton gingham)
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Pins or clips
  • Sewing machine, Iron
  • Ribbon, twill tape, or self-made fabric ties (about 16″ total; I made mine from the same fabric as the cover itself)
  • Optional: erasable fabric pen

Design Features

  • Boxed corners These give the cover a clean, structured look while fitting snugly around the tissue box.
  • Top opening A centered slit allows tissues to be pulled out easily.
  • Side ties Two sets of ties on each end hold the cover in place and are really cute.

How to Make It

  1. Cut your fabric You will need one piece of fabric that wraps all the way around your tissue box, with room on the opening ends for a double-folded hem. Also make sure that your side edges have enough room for your seam allowance! I left extra room and sewed French seams.
    • Here is a quick diagram for a 9″ x 5″ x 4″ tissue box. I left ample room on the sides (3″ per side).
    • Double-fold, iron, and pin the edges at this step, checking to make sure your edges meet together snugly but not too tightly around the box.
  1. Make your ties This is easiest done as two 9″ strips of fabric. Fold the ends in first and then double fold your strip of fabric lengthwise. Iron and pin as needed. Sew each tie as close to the edge as you can while catching both sides. After sewing, cut the strips in half, ties should be a little more than 4″ each. Making these thin helps with being able to easily tie the bows.
  2. Pin in your ties Drape the cover over your tissue box to see where you should put your ties on one side of the tissue, then fold your fabric in half to pin your other set of itself. For a professional finish, you can make your ties a little longer and double fold them with the edges of the cover!
  1. Sew the edges Finish your edges as you like! I sewed two rows of stitches because I thought that it looked pretty and gives extra support for the little ties.
  1. Sew French seams along the edges Gatefold the fabric with wrong sides together, centering the double-folded ends. Sew edges with a 1/8″ seam, then flip out the cover so that right sides are together and press. If you want to fit it on the tissue box, you can insert the tissue box and mark where to sew the final seams. Remember again not to make it too tight!
  1. Tailor Corner Finally, with the cover on the tissue box, fold out excess fabric as a triangle on each corner. I like to use an erasable pen at this step and draw the line down each seam as shown. Remove from the tissue box and sew.

Now you are all finished. Put your tissue box inside and tie the bows shut.

Enjoy your adorable tissue box cover!

Care Instructions

As long as you use pre-shrunk and washable fabric, this cover is machine washable and will soften beautifully over time. I seldom wash these because they really do not get dirty, it is just nice to have the option.

Tips & Variations

  • Try hand-stitching or embroidery for extra charm.
  • Make a few seasonal variations.
