Rosy Cocoa Lotion Bars

Make your own rose lotion bars with this moisturizing recipe. If you couldn’t tell from my other recipes, I love cocoa butter, I just think it melts so beautifully, and it smells divine.

A lotion bar is a solid, waterless moisturizer that melts with the warmth of your skin. Instead of being diluted with water like traditional lotions, it’s made from concentrated oils, butters, and waxes. Because they don’t contain water, they don’t need preservatives, and a little bit goes a long way. They are going to generally be too heavy for acne-prone or sensitive skin, so I recommend only using them as a body lotion only.

In the winter, I love taking hot showers. Coupled with our dry air, if I don’t moisturize, I end up with scaly shins. I like to apply this immediately after showering to lock in moisture and protect my shins, keeping them soft and not scaly! Lotion bars really shine for elbows, shins, heels, and hands.

It’s Worth It to Make Your Own!

I love making my own cosmetics. When you make your own, you can use higher-quality ingredients, you know there aren’t harmful ingredients or cheap fillers (dyes, petroleum-derived bases, fragrances, flavors, additives, silicones, texture agents, film-formers, etc), and you can customize your lotion to whatever you like: win, win, win!

Oh, and of course it’s a lot cheaper to make it yourself than to buy an equivalent when you are using ingredients like these butters and oils.

These lotion bars only have five ingredients and are so fun to make.
Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour
Cooling Time 30 minutes
Total Time 2 hours
Servings: 2 – 3oz bars

Ingredients

  • 52 g sweet almond oil, infused with roses
  • 28 g beeswax
  • 44 g unrefined cocoa butter
  • ⅛ tsp geranium essential oil
  • ¼-½ tsp rose french clay, optional

Equipment

  • heat-proof jar
  • small pot
  • stirring spoon
  • scale
  • sieve

Method

  1. Weigh all your ingredients, except for the essential oil and clay, into a heat-proof jar.
  2. But the jar into a double boiler: place in a small pot with a few inches of water. Simmer the water until the beeswax and cocoa butter is completely melted.
  3. Remove your jar from the pot (with a towel to protect your hand) and stir in your desired amount of clay: ¼ tsp will yield a lighter pink and ½ tsp a darker pink.
  4. Cool for a minute and then stir in the essential oil. Pour into your molds and cool until solid.
  5. Pop your lotion bars out and moisturize your skin with an adorable, nourishing rose.
