Pink Clay Facial Soap

Homemade face soap is a lovely addition to your bathroom. This bar smells beautiful and contains pink French clay, which helps absorb excess oil while cleansing the skin. Its delicate, uplifting scent turns a chore into a small daily luxury, and you can feel good knowing that you made it with natural, nourishing ingredients.

I think this blend of essential oils (geranium, lavender, clary sage, and bergamot) is just heavenly!

Lye Safety

Lye is caustic before it reacts with oils and requires some safety precautions:

  • Wear PPE! Goggles, long gloves are essential. You could also wear a mask
  • Mix your lye with water in a well-ventilated area, or outside.
  • Always add lye to water, not water to lye!
  • Keep kids and pets away while working with lye
  • Use heat-safe, non-reactive containers (stainless steel, heavy plastic). Avoid aluminum.
  • If lye or lye solution touches skin, immediately wash with cold water!
  • Thoroughly clean area after using lye.

Ingredients

Lye Solution
  • 376 g distilled water
  • 188 g lye
  • 4 tsp pink french clay
Oils
  • 680 g olive oil 50%
  • 340 g coconut oil (unrefined) 25%
  • 272 g shea butter (unrefined) 20%
  • 68 g castor oil 5%
Enhancements
  • 6 tsp geranium essential oil
  • 3 tsp bergamot essential oil
  • 2 tsp lavender essential oil
  • 2 tsp clary sage essential oil

Equipment

  • thermometer
  • scale
  • PPE: safety goggles, safety gloves, optional mask
  • stainless steel pot or non-reactive mixing bowl
  • immersion blender
  • soap molds or soap loaf mold

Method

  1. Measure your oils (coconut, shea, olive, castor) in a stainless steel pot, or a microwave proof plastic bowl (if you prefer microwaving your oils).
  2. With your safety gear on, and in a well ventilated space, pour your lye into your water. Stir until dissolved, the fuming should dissipate after a minute or so.
  3. Melt your oils on your stove's lowest setting.
  4. Once your lye solution has cooled to 130℉, stir in the pink French clay.
  5. Once your lye and oils solution have both come down to 110℉-120℉, stir them together and add in the essential oils.
  6. With an immersion blender, blend until trace. Pour into molds!
  7. Wait 24-48 hours to unmold.
  8. Cure for 4-6 weeks in a drafty place (I think the top of the fridge is a great spot).
