I love Blueland’s toilet tabs! Honestly, I didn’t realize how expensive they were until I was walking away from Costco with my husband and he balked at the $20 bag of 30 tabs on the receipt (and promptly went to return them before we made it to the car). I couldn’t blame him, and I figured I could probably make something comparable and much cheaper anyways. This is a recipe for homemade toilet cleaner in the convenient form of toilet tabs!

Most conventional toilet cleaners are made of ingredients I prefer to leave outside: bleach, chlorine, ammonia, quats (quaternary ammonium compounds), petroleum-derived surfactants, synthetic dyes, and fragrances. These can be irritating and cause headaches (which I am prone to and do my best to avoid!). Also, using these can leave your bathroom smelling clean, but that clean scent comes from a cocktail of undisclosed additives and fragrances, not necessarily actual cleanliness. If you have a septic like me, those harsh formulas can disrupt the bacteria ecosystem on cleanup duty. To me, choosing natural ingredients and making my own isn’t being fussy, it’s a low-cost way to make my home healthier for my family.

• Cost: This homemade toilet cleaner is very cheap!
• Health: No chlorine, ammonia, quats, petroleum surfactants, dyes, mystery fragrances.
• Effective: Baking soda + citric acid fizz to loosen residue and help with scrubbing, hydrogen peroxide + vinegar clean.
• Setpic-Friendly: Need I say more?
• Low-Waste: No need for disposable plastic tubs, wrappers, bags, etc.

Toilet Cleaner Tabs

This is a homemade toilet cleaner recipe, my version of a Blueland toilet tab dupe. Simply mix up the cleaner, press into a mold, and freeze.

• 1 cup baking soda
• ¼ cup citric acid (or, lemon juice)
• 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
• ½ tsp white vinegar
• ½ tsp essential oil

• silicone mold

Method

 

1. Mix together your baking soda and citric acid in a bowl. Smash any clumps.
2. Mix together your hydrogen peroxide and vinegar together in a small bowl (I use a measuring cup since they are so small!)
3. Pour the liquid into your powders in thirds, stir between each addition. Do not dump all the liquid in at once!
4. Finally, add the essential oil and stir to combine.
5. Firmly press mixture into molds. You can use a spoon, but I thought it was easier to use gloved hands instead.
6. Put your molds in the freezer and allow to harden 6+ hours. They will harden and be ready for storage!

I’m planning to make my next batch in my favorite little butterfly molds. These hexagons are a little small so I use two per toilet bowl.
